The standard for Private Investigators is PSA 42:2015.

Since 1 November 2015, contractors providing security services as a private investigator require a license from the Private Security Authority (PSA).

Applicants for a licence in this sector must first satisfy the PSA that they possess the competence to provide the service. Section 3.1.3 of the Standard sets out the means by which competence may be demonstrated.

Stellar Certification Services provide certification to this standard.

Only those licensed by the PSA are permitted to advertise or represent themselves as a Licensed Private Investigator. It is an offence for a person to engage or employ an unlicensed Private Investigator.

When you sign a contract with Stellar, we will inform the PSA that you are one of our clients.

The PSA charges for the first two years are, provided you are a new business, €1,000 and thereafter €1,250 per two-year cycle up to and including a turnover of €300,000.  If you are an existing company the charges are €1,250 for each 2-year cycle up to the € 300,000 turnover.  To get a list of charges for the PSA for turnovers exceeding €300,000, please refer to the PSA web site at www.psa-gov.ie.  At present all licences within the PSA suite of standards cover a two-year cycle.

When required, Stellar will do an audit which will comprise of the PSA 42 audit covering your company’s management systems, including tax clearance, insurances, references, screening of individuals, I.D. cards, client contracts, etc.

On completion and compliance to the standard Stellar will award your certificates of compliance, you can then apply to the PSA for your licence, and once everything is in order with your application, your full licence will be issued by the PSA.

You will be required to have your surveillance audit 1 year after the date of your certification audit.
